Narrow lanes and traditional shophouses invite exploration by cyclo, while it's many beautiful public spaces - lakes, parks, tree-lined boulevards and monuments - give it an air of elegance and harmony with nature unique among Asian capitals. Scenic Halong Bay, located on the South China Sea, is home to beautiful limestone islands and floating fishing villages, best explored aboard a traditional wooden boat. In Hue, history comes alive in it's many ancient temples, imperial buildings, and French-style edifices. From Hue traverse the spectacular Hai Van Pass to visit Danang, a coastal city of ancient origins which served as major U.S. air base during the war. The ancient town of Hoi An is a highlight of any visit to Vietnam. It's colorful shophouses and temples reflect a diverse heritage, dating back to the 16th and 17th century, when it was a major port for Western, Chinese, and Japanese traders. In the south we arrive in Saigon, a vibrant metropolis teeming with energy, activity and motion. Outside on the streets, young professionals zip by on their motorcycles, chatting on cellphones; inside the quiet temple courtyards worshippers pray amidst clouds of incense. The French influence is readily seen in the old colonial buildings, such as the Opera House and City Hall, which serve as a contrast to the luxury hotels, shopping malls, and gourmet restaurants springing up across the city.
Day 1: Hanoi. Arrive at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport and transfer by sedan to your hotel in Hanoi.
Day 2: Hanoi. Full-day private tour of Hanoi City including a ride through the Old Quarter by cyclo (rickshaw). Day 3: Halong Bay/Hue. Depart Hanoi in the morning for a drive to scenic Halong Bay. Day 4: Hue. Hue, located in central Vietnam, was established in the 17th century and served as the capital of Vietnam for more than 140 years. We start our exploration on a local boat, cruising down the Perfume River to the iconic Thien Mu Pagoda, an elegant seven-tiered octagonal tower and Hue's most widely recognizable monument. In the Old Imperial City visits include the Imperial Citadel, a vast complex built in the early 19th century and modeled after the Forbidden City of Beijing. Sights here are the Flag Tower, Ngo Mon Gate, Dien Tho Residence where the Queen mother lived, Thai Hoa Palace, the Halls of the Mandarins, and the original Nine Dynastic Urns. In the afternoon venture into the countryside to see the Imperial Tomb of Tu Duc, the longest reigning Vietnamese Emperor, and the dramatic hillside Imperial Tomb of Khai Dinh. A visit to Dong Ba Market rounds out the day. (breakfast, lunch).
Day 5: Danang/Hoi An. Journey from Hue to Danang over scenic mountainous roads with spectacular views of the coastline. Half-way between the two lies the dramatic Hai Van Pass, the dividing line between the climate zones of north and south. In Danang visit the Cham Museum, and pass Non Nuoc Beach, a famous spot for U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War. Continue to Hoi An, with a visit to the Marble Mountains en route. (breakfast, lunch).
Day 6: Hoi An. The exquisitely preserved merchant town of Hoi An was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, and is best explored on foot. Wander the cobbled streets to the bustling central market and small harbour. The walking tour will also include a visit to a private home, where members of the same family have lived continuously for centuries, Sa Huynh Museum featuring exhibitions from the earliest period of Hoi An's history, and the famous Japanese Covered Bridge. (breakfast, lunch).
Day 7: Saigon. Drive to Danang Airport and then fly to Saigon. Upon arrival embark on an excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an important Vietcong base during the war. Walk through the area and learn about the day-to-day life of the Vietcong, and even venture inside the tunnel if you choose. Afterwards return to Saigon. (breakfast, lunch).
Day 8: Saigon. Full-day private tour of Saigon. Begin with a visit to the historic center, strolling along Dong Khoi Street, the main shopping thoroughfare and heart of old colonial Saigon. Pass by classic European-style landmarks such as the ornate City Hall, the old Opera House, neo-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Central Post Office. Tour the Reunification Palace, followed by a visit to the War Remnants Museum, and then the Emperor of Jade Pagoda. This trip explores Sa Pa and it's environs, located in northwest Vietnam near the Chinese border. Situated in the highlands, Sa Pa was originally built as a hill station during the French colonial days, and with a cooler climate than Hanoi, served as an escape from the hot city summers. It is an area of terraced rice fields and verdant valleys, and is rich in it's variety of flower and fauna. The region is also home to many ethnic minorities, most prominently the Red Dzao and H'mong. The area is reached by overnight train from Hanoi. Finish the day by seeing a Water Puppet Show, a fantastic art form where puppets appear to "dance on water." (breakfast).
Day 3: Hanoi/Train/Lao Cai. Enjoy a free day in Hanoi to relax and enjoy the restaurants and shops. Tonight board the Victoria Express Train for an overnight ride to Lao Cai. The train features two sleeping carriages, each with 6 cabins that are all air-conditioned, wood paneled, with individual reading lights, baggage storage, toilets and oversized windows. The journey takes 8.5 hours. (breakfast).
Day 4: Lao Cai/Sa Pa. After an early morning arrival in Lao Cai, continue by road to Sa Pa. After breakfast depart for an excursion to Ta Phin, inhabited by the Red Dao people, known for their distinctive red headscarves and skill at handicrafts. Continue on to visit scenic Ham Rong Mountain, and San May (Cloud Yard) for a panoramic view of Sa Pa town. (breakfast).
Day 5: Sa Pa. Explore the dramatic countryside around Sa Pa, visiting some of the local villages that nestle in the surrounding valleys and hillsides. The area is mainly inhabited by the Black Hmong and Red Dao peoples, as well as the Tay, and continue a traditional way of life. Trekking today covers some moderately hilly terrain, past terraced rice fields, mountain streams, and bamboo stands. (breakfast).
Day 6: Sa Pa/Lao Cai. Return to Lao Cai by road to board the overnight Victoria Express train to Hanoi. On Sundays, visit the colorful market at Bac Ha, where ethnic minorities from around the region gather to trade water buffalo, livestock, and handicrafts. The people inhabiting the area are mainly Flower H'mong, but there are also Dao, Nung, Xa Fang, Phu La, and many more ethnicities as well. (breakfast).
Day 7: Depart Hanoi. Arrive back in Hanoi and transfer to Hanoi International Airport. (breakfast).

Upon arrival at the pier set sail for an overnight trip aboard a luxury traditional wooden junk, passing dramatic limestone islands and quiet fishing villages in the most scenic of settings. Pass the towns of Hon Gai and Cam Pha, Oan Lagoon, Mat Quy (Monster Head) and Am Tich (Teapot) Islets and Vung Vieng fishing village. Visit the fishing village by row boat, then enjoy free time back on board for activities such as swimming, sunbathing, or a traditional massage. In the evening after dropping anchor is Happy Hour and a Vietnamese cooking demonstration followed by dinner. Lunch and dinner is served onboard the cruise. (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
Day 4: Halong Bay/Hue. Greet the day with Tai Chi on the sundeck while tea and coffee are served. The boat weighs anchor to cruise through the bay passing beautiful spots like Trong (Drum), Trinh Nu (Virgin), then exploring Surprise Cave (Sung Sot). There are plenty of shops to explore, with a good selection of art stores and tailors. In the evening there are many excellent restaurants and bars to choose from. (breakfast).
Day 8: Nha Trang. Travel to Nha Trang, one of Vietnam's most beautiful beaches. From Hoi An drive to Danang Airport to catch your flight to Cam Ranh Bay, then transfer to your hotel in Nha Trang. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure. (breakfast, dinner).
Day 9: Nha Trang. Explore Nha Trang, with visits to Po Nagar Cham Towers, Lang Son Pagoda, the French-gothic style Nha Trang Cathedral, and Bao Dai's Villas, former retreat of Vietnam's last emperor, set on three hills with brilliant views of the South China Sea, Nha Trang Bay, and Cau Da dock. (breakfast, lunch).
Day 10: Dalat. Travel overland to Dalat, a charming former colonial hill station. The balance of the afternoon is free. (breakfast, dinner).
Day 11: Dalat. The sightseeing program today starts with a stroll around the French District, whose atmosphere is reminiscent of a provincial town in France. Continue to whimsical Hang Nga Art Gallery, nicknamed "Crazy House" by the locals for the caves, giant spider webs and a concrete giraffe incorporated into the building's design. Other sights include Bao Dai's Summer Palace, the Flower Garden, and Cremmaillere Railway Station. Finish the day outside Dalat with a cable car ride over fields and scenic countryside to Truc Lam Pagoda, a boat ride around Tuyen Lam (Paradise) Lake, and a visit to Datanla Falls, one of the most naturally beautiful falls in the region. Day 12: Saigon. Fly to Saigon, Vietnam's largest city. Tour the Reunification Palace, followed by a visits to the War Remnants Museum, Emperor of Jade Pagoda, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Central Post Office. Day 6: My Tho/Saigon. Embark on an excursion to My Tho, located in the rich agricultural region of the Mekong Delta. Visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, a beautiful temple recognized as a national historical and cultural relic. The pagoda features a lovely garden of ancient and ornamental trees, and also serves as a sanctuary for orphans and other needy children. Afterwards board a local boat to explore the Mekong River islands, stopping at a fruit orchard to enjoy fruit and tea, and some local music. There is time for a brief sampan ride through the tiny waterways that thread the island before returning to Saigon. (breakfast).
Day 7: Siem Reap. Fly to Siem Reap, gateway to the famed temples of Angkor. Begin your exploration at Angkor Thom, the fortified "Great City" that was the final capital of the Khmer empire. Enclosed by a wall and wide moats, the city includes many of Angkor's most popular sights. Enter the monumental South Gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods, and continue to the Terrace of Elephants and Terrace of Leper King, both adorned with dramatic bas reliefs. Visit the ruined Baphuon, Royal Enclosure and Phimeankas before continuing to the Bayon Temple. Day 8: Siem Reap. The crown jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat, is the national symbol and highlight of any visit to Cambodia. It is the largest, best preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkor temples. Cross the vast moat, and enter the main building, ascending through a series of galleries and courtyard before reaching the central sanctuary. Intricate stone-carvings adorn nearly every surface, with some 1,700 Apsaras, or celestial dancers, sculpted into the walls. Angkor Wat is stunning at any time of day, but sunrise and sunset are especially beautiful times to watch the play of light on the stones. Afterwards continue to Ta Prohm, built in the Bayon style it looks very much as most of the Angkor monuments would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled across them. A most interesting and distinctive feature of Ta Prohm are the twists of tree trunks and roots that emerge from the ruins and soar upward into a lovely shaded canopy. Also visit Banteay Srei, smaller in comparison to other Angkor temples, but considered to be the jewel of classical Khmer art. (breakfast).
Day 9: Kampong Kleang/Siem Reap. Embark on an excursion to Kampong Kleang, one of the largest of the Tonle Sap lake communities. From here board a boat to explore the floating fishing villages that live at the edges of the lake, passing submerged forests and fishing farms. (breakfast).

In the afternoon embark on an excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an important Vietcong base during the war. Day 3: My Tho/Saigon. Travel to My Tho, located in the rich agricultural region of the Mekong Delta. Visit Vinh Trang Pagoda, a beautiful temple recognized as a national historical and cultural relic. The pagoda features a lovely garden of ancient and ornamental trees, and also serves as a sanctuary for orphans and other needy children. Afterwards board a local boat to explore the Mekong River islands, stopping at a fruit orchard to enjoy fruit and tea, and some local music. There is time for a brief sampan ride through the tiny waterways that thread the island before returning to Saigon. (breakfast).
Day 4: Hanoi. Fly to Hanoi, capital city of Vietnam. Late afternoon see a performance of Water Puppets, a fantastic art form where puppets appear to "dance on water." (breakfast).
Day 5: Hanoi. Full-day private tour of Hanoi city. Sights include the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh's Stilt House, Hoan Kiem Lake, and view colonial landmarks such as the Opera House and St. Joseph's Cathedral. From the lake, explore the Old Quarter on foot. The network of narrow alleys and shophouses are also known as "The 36 Streets," each street being named after the merchandise traditionally sold there. In the afternoon visit one of Hanoi's famous museums, either the History Museum, including exhibits spanning the entirety of Vietnam's history, or the Museum of Ethnology which brings to life the astonishing ethnic diversity in Vietnam. Day 6: Halong Bay/Hanoi. Depart Hanoi in the morning for a drive to scenic Halong Bay. Upon arrival at the pier at midday begin a cruise aboard a traditional wooden junk boat, passing craggy limestone cliffs, and stopping at different islands to explore some of the areas many caves. Lunch will be served aboard the boat. Late afternoon return to Hanoi. (breakfast, lunch).
Day 7: Luang Prabang. Fly to Luang Prabang, the enchanting Laotian town filled with historic temples and colonial-style buildings. (breakfast).
Day 8: Luang Prabang. Sightseeing this morning focuses on sights around town. In the morning see the bustle and activity of a local market, then continue to visit some of Luang Prabang's most important temples; Wat Visoun, the oldest operating temple in Luang Prabang with a collection of gilded wooden Buddhas from the 15th and 16th centuries, Wat Aham, known for it's two large banyan trees, and Wat Xieng Thong, the crown jewel of all monasteries and temples in the city. Also visit the National Museum (Royal Palace), a turn-of-the century royal residence which has been preserved as it was when the royal family lived there; and Wat Mai, Luang Prabang's largest and perhaps most photographed temple due to it's rich decoration. In the afternoon embark on a boat excursion up the Mekong River to the steep limestone cliffs overlooking the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers, home to the Pak Ou Caves. These extraordinary caves are filled with Buddha images of every style and material imaginable. On the return journey stop at Ban Xang Hai Village, a local village famous for the production of lao lao, the local rice wine whisky. (breakfast).
Day 9: Luang Prabang. Travel by road to visit the local village of Ban Muang Khai. Continue by road to Kuang Si Waterfall, located in a perfect natural setting near Luang Prabang, this multi-tiered waterfall tumbles over limestone formations into a series of turquoise pools. There is a chance to swim in the clear water, or simply relax in the natural environment. Finish with a visit to Ban Tha Pene, a nearby Khmu village. (breakfast).

Important sights to be explored are the Temple of Literature, which served as Vietnam's first university dating back to 1076, One Pillar Pagoda, a Buddhist temple considered one of Vietnam's famous, and Ho Chi Minh Memorial Complex, site of the mausoleum where the body of the famous president lies in state.
