Treasures of Japan
11 days - Tokyo, Kamakura, Nikko, Hakone, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara
Cover some of Japan's most beautiful and important sights on this 11-day journey. Begin in Tokyo, the vibrant capital city where modern hotels and skyscrapers co-exist with ancient temples and shrines. While in Tokyo try your hand at making sushi and learn about this famous Japanese dish now popular the world over. A day trip from Tokyo takes you to Kamakura, a coastal town that was once a powerful political center ruled by the Kamakura Shogunate. A second day trip takes you to beautiful Nikko, nestled in the mountains of Toshigi Prefecture amidst a magnificent cedar tree forest. Famous sites here are ornate Toshogu Shrine, and the mausoleum of the Tokugawa Shoguns. After Tokyo your tour continues to Hakone, famous for hot springs, natural beauty, and its view of nearby Mt. Fuji. After an overnight stay board a lightening-fast bullet train bound for Hiroshima and visit Peace Memorial Park and Museum, dedicated to a peaceful world free from nuclear weapons. The next morning visit famous Itsukushima Shrine, whose iconic torii gate appears to be afloat at high tide. The trip concludes with a visit to the ancient capital, Kyoto, a true highlight of any itinerary of Japan, and a full-day visit to neighboring Nara to see Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga Shrine, and Yakushiji Temple.
